Install and allow location
Your location sets the 50 km circle the app watches. Threats outside that circle won't notify you, even if they're severe.

Choose the smallest hail size worth waking you, the confidence level you trust, and how far ahead you want warning. Send a test notification to see how it looks.

Hail Alert keeps checking in the background. When something crosses your thresholds, your phone tells you — and the widget shows the status the rest of the time.

Where the numbers come from
Hail Alert retrieves its hail data from the Vaisala Xweather API and presents it in the app. Severity bands follow Bureau of Meteorology severe thunderstorm criteria.

Threats are checked within 50 km of your location. Anything further away won't trigger a notification, even if it's severe.
Only if you want it to. A threat has to clear both your minimum hail size and your minimum confidence before a notification is sent.
Warning time depends on the storm — it's based on live radar detection, not a long-range forecast, so it can range from under an hour down to just minutes for fast-forming cells. Every alert shows the specific predicted time window for that storm, and we check for new threats every hour so you're notified as soon as one is detected, with no extra delay added on our end.
