arrives.

Hail Alert watches the storms near you and sends a notification the moment a hail threat comes within range — with the expected stone size, how far away it is, and where it's heading.

Android 1.0.0 is the current release. Hail threats are checked within 50 km of your location.

Notifications that reach you

A push notification the moment a hail threat is detected nearby, with expected stone size, distance and the window it's likely to hit.

The threat on a map

See the threat area against your own location, its forecast path, and which direction it's tracking and how fast.

Home screen widgets

Current status sits on your home screen, so a glance tells you whether you're clear without opening anything.

Your own thresholds

Set a minimum hail size and a minimum confidence, and pick a 1, 6 or 24 hour alert window. Anything below your bar stays quiet.

How it works

Three steps, then the app does the watching.

Severity bands

Aligned with Bureau of Meteorology severe thunderstorm criteria.

Minor Under 13 mm · pea to marble
Moderate 13–20 mm · marble to 5 cent coin
Severe 20–50 mm · 5 cent coin to golf ball
Giant 50 mm and above ·  cricket ball

Install and allow location

Your location sets the 50 km circle the app watches. Threats outside that circle won't notify you, even if they're severe.

02

Set your thresholds

Choose the smallest hail size worth waking you, the confidence level you trust, and how far ahead you want warning. Send a test notification to see how it looks.

03

Get on with your day

Hail Alert keeps checking in the background. When something crosses your thresholds, your phone tells you — and the widget shows the status the rest of the time.

Data and accuracy

Where the numbers come from

Hail Alert retrieves its hail data from the Vaisala Xweather API and presents it in the app. Severity bands follow Bureau of Meteorology severe thunderstorm criteria.

Every size reading carries a confidence figure, shown alongside it. Low confidence readings are labelled as such rather than hidden.
Predictions are estimates. Hail is a small-scale phenomenon and a storm can shift after an alert is sent.
Hail Alert is not a substitute for official Bureau of Meteorology warnings or emergency service advice.
